At Sowilo, we celebrate a wide range of cultural and diversity events each year to honour and reflect the richness of our school community.
These special occasions provide students with the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the many cultural backgrounds, identities, and traditions that make our community unique and vibrant.
From the Biggest Morning Tea and Harmony Day to Samoan Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Pride Month, and more, our events highlight both cultural heritage and diversity in all its forms. Through shared food, music, storytelling, art, and meaningful conversations, students are encouraged to embrace inclusivity, celebrate difference, and build a deeper understanding of the world and people around them.
Book Week
Book Week is held annually where books, authors and reading are celebrated.
Students get to dress up as their favourite book character. Staff select their three favourite costumes and prizes are awarded to most popular.
The majority of staff also dress up but no prizes for them, just recognition.
Halloween
Halloween at Sowilo focuses on creativity.
Staff and Students create elaborate costumes, props and make-up for our annual costume contest.
Rainbow Day
Rainbow Dress-up Day celebrates Sowilo’s diverse and accepting community highlighting the safe environment we strive to create.
Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a major American holiday which centers on community, gratitude and celebrates shared accomplishments.
Sowilo’s students and staff come together to reflect on their year and celebrate with the Annual Thanksgiving Lunch.
The Lunch features all the Thanksgiving classics:
🦃 Turkey with savoury gravy
🥔 Mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes
🥦 Green vegetables and corn
🍇 Classic cranberry sauce
🥧 Homemade pumpkin pie (lovingly crafted by Lindsay, our teacher Lucky’s husband!) and pecan pie for dessert!
Harmony Day
Harmony Day is a celebration of Australia’s cultural diversity, inclusiveness, and respect for all people.
We host a morning tea with foods from around the world.
Charity Work
Our charity initiatives start from the ground up here at Sowilo, whereby we work closely with our Integration Program students who are generally aged between 12 and 13.
Our aim each year is to use our community grown or produced goods to generate income that contributes to a community in need.
Past contributions have included supporting Ukrainian families impacted by the Russia/Ukrainian war; Tjuntjuntjara community school in the Great Victorian Desert, WA; Perth Observatory, Possum Valley Animal Sanctuary and the Cancer Council WA
Specialised Programs
Our specialised programs provide another side to learning other than academic learning.
Often coupled with academic styled programs, specialised programs offer opportunities for learning about yourself, life or other relevant skills that you may not otherwise learn at ‘mainstream schooling’.
