Sowilo students have proved themselves to be very competitive in State and National competitions over the years. Students have won over 60 medals between them since 2010.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been part of our school culture and curriculum since 2010.
Starting with one white and one purple belt instructor and eight students the program has now grown, in 2024, to two black belt instructors, 3 blue belt instructors and thirty students. Over this time, we have seen twenty-three students compete on a local, State and National level, winning 12 gold, 33 silver and 12 bronze.
In 2024, we have now 7 Sowilo students who have achieved their adult blue belt level in BJJ which is a great achievement.
BJJ serves many purposes for our community on a micro and macro level.
On a micro level:
- Increasing the link between sport and higher academic achievement through more sporting options
- Teaching morals and ethics associated with BJJ philosophy
- Using BJJ as a conduit to our counselling process
- Developing a healthy subculture
- Linking food and nutrition to enhanced sporting and health achievements
- Assisting students with identity and ownership
On a macro level:
- Expanding the students’ exposure to other communities outside of school through involvement with BJJ clubs
- Students gain the understanding of what’s involved in competition teams and the guidelines that are associated with competing on local and state levels.
- Providing employment and training options
- Involvement in interstate and international clubs

David Marshall - Head Instructor
I have loved BJJ for a very long time!
I have been training for about 10 years and have been a Black Belt since December 2017.
I’m not a big competition guy…. the nerves get me but I’m sure Kyle may one day talk me into it.
I think BJJ is an amazing martial art form and so important for self development and discipline. One day I might get close to beating Kyle, but for now I’ll let him 🙂 be ahead and beat me every time!
