COORDINATOR / SENIOR SOCIAL WORKER
Bio
Dave is employed in a dual role encompassing both areas of Social Work and duties involved with being the Principal of the school.
His Social Work role offers support to each student in areas such as emotional, literacy, health and self care issues, self advocacy, self empowerment and interpersonal communication skills whilst also providing levels of counseling relevant to the students needs.
Dave provides the first steps in liaising with Human Services if required by the student.
“I am a Curtin graduate from the school of Social Work and also have my Certificate 3 and 4 and Diploma in Human Services, specializing in Youth Work.
My experiences are wide and varied, spanning from working on a therapeutic level in locked ward dementia units to youth work on mobile recreation buses throughout our southern suburbs.
I carry a strong passion for Sowilo because I believe in being there for the journey that our students have undertaken. Sowilo is a wonderful place, one which I wish I’d had in my school years.

Hi my name is Lauren, and I was very lucky to be given the opportunity to complete the final placement of my Social Work degree at Sowilo in 2020.
I instantly loved the community vibe of the school and was blown away by this amazing group of young people.
I now feel even luckier to have been invited back to become part of the welfare team!
My background is as a registered nurse working mainly in Oncology and Palliative Care in Victoria.
After moving back to WA and taking a break from nursing while having my two gorgeous children, I decided I needed a change of scenery and started my social work degree.
In my spare time I love to do anything at the beach or near the water, cook sweet treats, spend time with my family and read.

My name is Hanna and I have just joined the Sowilo Community as a Youth Worker. Previous studies have been English, Philosophy and Art.
I am a mother of three and moved to Australia from Sweden 14 years ago.
I first came to know about the school when I did my work placement here in 2014 and fell in love with the passionate and engaging school concept, the staff and the students.
I have always enjoyed working with children and thoroughly believe that all students can strive and do well in such an evironment where they’re “met where they’re at”.
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, drawing, reading and writing, but also embarrassing my children with a fair bit of “closet dancing”.
I love sports and the outdoors and wish my labrador dog would let me walk him more often then he walks (drags) me.
I am so excited about being part of the Sowilo Community and am thoroughly looking forward to working with students and staff here.

I’m a youth worker here at Sowilo and i’m also a former student. I finished school in 2011 and I’m beyond stoked to be back!
My Sowilo days were some of the best times of my life and it’s an honour to be working with some of the people who helped shape who I am today.
I have a Diploma in Counselling and I also have 11 years of retail under my belt. I did not anticipate how fun and rewarding it would be working with the youth at Sowilo but I can honestly say I absolutely love my job.

Hi, I’m Patricia and I am a Social Worker.
I am originally from India, my family and I moved to Western Australia back in 2002, and Australia has been my home since.
I am passionate about working with kids and young people, they’re an amazing bunch of people.
My hobbies include taking my dogs on walks, running, weights at the gym & spending time with family and friends.
A fun fact about me is that I have an identical twin sister. It’s always fun having people run into her and assuming its me!

Hi, I’m Jacob, but people call me Jake. I’m the new youth worker at Sowilo.
Along with my job at Sowilo, I am currently a support worker which I have done since 2020. I have previous experience working with children, teaching gymnastics as well as working in after school care.
Outside of work I spend my time doing photography and training martial arts, mainly Brazilian jiu jitsu which I started in 2017

My history with Sowilo began when Wilson Hall was our teaching hub and the journey of finding suitable premises for the school began.
I have an enormous respect for the team at the school, for their commitment in securing a future for our students and staying true to the real value of education. A vision that I remain committed to.
My teaching background is in Economics and Business, Learning Support and Special Ed, but my passion will always be literacy.

Talofa! My name is Selela Tali. My students know me as La. I am from New Zealand, born to Samoan parents.
I joined Sowilo in January 2011. I look after the FIG (Filling in the Gaps) programme at Sowilo. This programme focuses on getting back to basics in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy.
I love teaching. I have passion working with young people and assisting them in their education, because I believe that everyone deserves a chance to do well.
I was trained as a teacher at the University of Auckland with a focus on primary education; and also completed a Diploma of Education at the University of Western Australia.
My family moved to Perth to start a Samoan church which we run in Gosnells. I am passionate about my Samoan language and am teaching it weekly to my Sunday School students.
It’s fantastic working at Sowilo. We have an awesome team that gets along really well.
I am glad to be part of a team that works together for the better of others.

Hi, my name is Maree and I am Sowilo’s new Science teacher. I have always been a water-lover and had a keen interest in the ocean.
After high school I combined my love of the ocean and my affinity for science and completed a degree in Marine Science at the University of Western Australia.
After I finished my degree, I went on to study aquaculture at Challenger TAFE marine hatchery. It was here that I discovered a passion for teaching, but it wasn’t until much later, after having some great career experiences in aquaculture, marine and freshwater toxicology, marine and freshwater field sampling and environmental impact assessment, and industrial chemistry analysis, that I decided to become a high school science teacher.
I am a lover of anything outdoors including camping, fishing, boating, hiking, rock-climbing, scuba diving, mountain biking, and of course swimming.
I love anything adventurous and daring, ride horses and motorbikes, and won’t hesitate to climb trees or jump off high places if I am feeling brave.
I am very sporty and can be quite competitive when I choose, probably a result of growing up with 3 brothers.
I have two children and two step-children between the ages of 5 and 16 years who keep me on my toes.
I am excited to become a member of the Sowilo team and contributing to the amazing work that this school is doing.

Howdy!
I’m Anastasia Cooper, but everyone calls me Lucky. It started as my World of Warcraft character — Luckycharm — and, well, Aussies love to shorten everything. So, Lucky it is! 😊
I teach English and HASS — basically, anything with stories. I’m originally from Houston, Texas, and earned my Teaching degree from Texas Woman’s University near Dallas.
I started out teaching 6th grade Reading before an Aussie bloke asked me to marry him and go on an adventure. Fast forward to now — I’ve been in Perth for 13 years and part of the Sowilo family since 2019. I’m also in the process of becoming a full Australian citizen!
At Sowilo, I teach Senior General English, Year 10 English, Year 10 HASS, and LSG2 HASS. I also run the Keys 4 Life program and am the Coordinator for the Design and Technology Program (where I get to indulge my inner nerd with Minecraft, coding, and all things tech).
Speaking of nerdy — in my spare time, I’m into all things geeky: video games, computers, movies, comics, board games, Dungeons & Dragons, PAX, reading… basically anything with WiFi. The sun and I are not friends.
You might also meet my classroom sidekick, Coconut, my 10-year-old Border Collie. She comes to school with me and helps bring joy and calm to our class.
I’m also a proud mum of two awesome kids who are active in Australian Scouts and have recently joined Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Hi. My name is Annie.
I started at Sowilo the beginning of 1st term of 2023 and am excited to join the community.
I have a background of Tourism and Hospitality Management, and a Post Grad in Education.
Some of my teaching experience includes but is not limited to High School Special Ed (Life skills Mathematics, PHPE and HSIE) Technology and Applied Studies as well as Lower Primary specialising in Physical Education and Digital Technologies.
I have been in full time and casual teaching roles in the last 4 years. It’s been almost a year since moving to WA from NSW.
I have a passion for home decor and organisation l spend lots of time browsing for content on styling and organising home spaces.
Shopping for anything nice mostly clothes is one of my favourite things to do – though l often times tend to overdo it.
l always look forward to travelling for leisure and relaxation every now and then.
I love journaling anything about my faith journey and serving in ministry.
Looking forward to creating long lasting memories in the community and making a difference in the lives of the young people.

My name is Graham and I have been teaching music at Sowilo since second term 2015. I have been a professional musician since 1982, and have played thousands of shows to millions of people in my career as a performer.
I have also presented many clinics and masterclasses in my role as product endorsee and music educator.
Three afternoons a week, I enjoy sharing my experience and the many joys of playing music with my friends at Sowilo.
Music, as well as being a great healer, is a truly universal language that recognises no borders or cultural divides, and it is my belief that having an appreciation and knowledge of music will help our kids with their various endeavours in life, whatever they may be.
We are many singers with one song – that’s just how the Sowilo family rolls.

Hi my name is Ange,
I am stoked to be joining Sowilo as a new Education Assistant. I have a background in childcare where I worked for 16 years and experience as a Special Needs Education Assistant in both primary and high school ages students. I am grateful to be working at Sowilo, a school that values each student as an individual and provides a flexible, supportive environment.
My hobbies include going for a bike ride around South Perth or heading down to the beach for a swim and breaky afterwards. I also like gaming, binge watching tv shows, seasonal weightlifting and gardening . Whenever I have a chance I like to get out of the city and take our two dogs on holidays so we can swim and chill out together.

Hi, I’m Nicolle! I am one of the Education Assistants here at Sowilo.
After completing a Diploma in Counselling, I came along to Sowilo to do a term of volunteering and was honored and excited to be invited back the following year to join the team.
I am currently studying a Certificate IV in School Based Education Support and have many years of experience working in admin, as well as in pharmacy as a Dispensary Technician.
I love spending my spare time with family and friends, outdoor adventuring with our kids or taking our dog (Ivar) for bush or beach walks.
I also share a passion for Brazilian Jiu jitsu with some of the other staff here at Sowilo and am very excited to have the opportunity of sharing time on the Jujitsu mats with some of the incredible Sowilo students!

Hi, I’m Sandra
I’ve been working as an Education Assistant since 2002 and have worked at a vast array of schools such as Special Needs, hard to staff, private, high academic and CARE schools.
Upon starting work as an EA, I did my Education Support – Certificate III Teachers Aide Special. To my surprise I enjoyed studying and wanted to gain more knowledge in my field of work, so I went on to do Certificate IV in Teachers Assistant (Special Needs), Diploma of Education Support and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
In my spare time I enjoy going to the movies, dancing, music, playing pool, Zumba, doing brain teasers and going to the beach.
Coming to work at Sowilo is like the icing on my cake (so to speak).

Kath Wainwright came on board in June 2008 and took over the books and heads the financial and human resources departments.
Qualified as an Accountant with a Bachelor of Business, Kath has brought with her years of experience from tenures in government and the private corporate sector.
Kath has worked in most states of Australia but admits to being originally from Melbourne.
Therefore her heart belongs to Collingwood though she does admit to owning a Dockers T-shirt which she sometimes wears whilst gardening?
Past times include kayaking, 4WD driving and takes the occasional sailing lesson in a a dinghy. Spending lots of time with friends in the wheatbelt, Kath loves the outdoors.
She is passionate about Sowilo and loves the interaction with students.
Kath takes her work very seriously, but secretly wishes to join the art classes.

Growing up in Brookdale and attending Gwynne Park Primary School and Armadale Senior High School, I have deep roots in the community.
I’m now raising my young family here, and when I’m not handling school fees and finances, you’ll likely find me enjoying the outdoors with my family, making the most of our beautiful surroundings or at Bunnings picking up supplies for my next DIY project.

Hey! My names Janine, I come from a very “corporate” environment working 11 years in the Construction Industry (boring) and I’m extremely excited to be in a super fun environment at Sowilo!
When I’m not at work you will likely find me outside, camping, swimming, gardening or travelling (or convincing my husband why we need to go travelling).
I also consider myself quite the little crafter (not that little I have an entire room dedicated to craft it’s a bit of an obsession with 50 half-finished projects but that’s fine).
I’m also a “Put the Christmas Tree up on the 1st of November” kind of person, I will find any and every excuse to decorate/celebrate Christmas.

Hi! My name is Jasmin.
I’m a part time finance assistant here at Sowilo.
I’ve been here since 2021.
As a first job, I don’t have as much experience as everyone else (a business/admin cert III only… so far) but I have been taught so much along the way. I’m still continuing to learn though, of course.
In my spare time, I’ll be bothering (with affection) my small army of chickens and ducks, attending to my small collection of plants, occasional weekend rock “hunting”/collecting, at the gym making my arms cry, checking out op shops (love a fun little trinket) or just bundled up reading at home while probably holding an iced latte or smoothie most of the time.

Hi, my name is Tim and I’m currently employed at Sowilo on a fulltime basis carrying out maintenance work and assisting with anything that I can help with.
I had previously held a 25+ year history in the security industry then a short 4 year stint in a mining supply store and now I’m here.
I was first involved with the school roughly 5 years ago assisting with mentoring several of the students offsite with BJJ. It was a pleasure to interact, communicate and watch the kids grow and become more and more confident.
When the opportunity to join Sowilo arose I jumped at the chance. Every day is different, I’m keeping busy and learning lots.
Out of school hours I enjoy spending time out with my partner and close friends. I enjoy riding my Harley, Driving my F100, camping, hunting and swimming down at the beach, got to have have a dog in my life too.

Hi!! My name is Coconut and I love everyone!
Every Tuesday I greet people with a tail wag, and a kiss if you let me. Once class starts, I’m pretty chill. I like to wander around to make sure everyone is okay, then go to people for pats.
Lunch time is my favourite! I will give you my best smile for leftovers, and double as a vacuum if anything is dropped on the floor.
Sometimes students take me for walkies, another wonderful part of the day. So come by and say hi!

Chuck…..He’s not a chicken or a duck…but chuck!
Chuck has been with us since 2011 and is our official school mascot.
He has been our front man on all recent Wilderness Treks and has endured the hard and fun times that his role demands.
Through the rain of camp misery, the dust of Yarra road and the dehydrating climate of MT Palmer chuck has always been faithful.
Like a Jiu Jitsu belt chuck does not wash as he believes that his knowledge should be forever displayed in his gnarly appearance!
